Remote Associate Attorney - Civil Defense Litigation
Position Overview: We are seeking a motivated Remote Associate Attorney to join our civil defense litigation team. The successful candidate will manage a diverse caseload of defense matters, provide strong legal analysis and advocacy, and work collaboratively with partners, paralegals, and clients. This role is fully remote with occasional travel to California courts as required and is ideal for an attorney with experience in civil defense litigation and an active California Bar membership.
Key Responsibilities: Manage a caseload of civil defense matters from intake through resolution, including strategy development and client counseling. Draft and file pleadings, motions, discovery requests and responses, briefs, settlement demands, and other court documents in accordance with California rules and local court procedures. Conduct legal research and prepare persuasive legal memoranda and trial-ready pleadings. Take and defend depositions, prepare witnesses, and coordinate discovery, including e-discovery protocols and privilege reviews. Prepare for and attend hearings, mediations, arbitrations, and trials appearing in California courts as necessary. Work closely with partners, co-counsel, claims professionals, and clients to develop defense strategies and manage expectations. Manage case budgets, billing, and timekeeping in accordance with firm and client guidelines. Supervise and mentor junior attorneys and paralegals, and coordinate workflow across remote teams. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of California substantive and procedural law, industry trends, and best practices in defense litigation.
Qualifications: Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school. Active membership in the California State Bar in good standing; eligible to appear in California courts.2+ years of civil defense litigation experience; insurance defense, personal injury, product liability, or professional liability experience preferred. Strong legal research, writing, and advocacy skills with a demonstrated record of drafting effective pleadings and motions. Familiarity with California Code of Civil Procedure, Evidence Code, local rules, and e-filing systems used by California courts. Proven experience conducting and defending depositions, preparing witnesses, and managing discovery (including e-discovery).Comfortable managing a remote practice: reliable high-speed internet, secure file handling, and proficiency with case management and collaboration tools (e.g., Clio, Westlaw/LEXIS, Microsoft Office, Zoom).Excellent client-facing skills, sound judgment, and the ability to work independently while collaborating with a distributed team. Willingness and ability to travel to California court appearances and depositions as required. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and commitment to meeting deadlines and billing expectations.
