Position Summary: A leading New York City nonprofit organization is seeking a Director of Government Grants to lead efforts to sustain and grow competitive, discretionary, and capital government grant revenue. This individual will be responsible for identifying funding opportunities, developing and submitting competitive grant proposals, and overseeing post-award reporting and compliance in collaboration with key internal and external stakeholders. Reporting to the Senior Director of Grants and Resource Development, the Director will work cross-functionally with development, program, external affairs, finance, legal, and administrative teams to align government funding opportunities with organizational priorities and goals.
Principal Responsibilities: Government Grants Strategy Lead the strategy for securing competitive and capital government grant revenue at the local, state, and federal levels. Identify new funding opportunities and align their pursuit with organizational priorities, programmatic needs, and emerging policy or regulatory trends. Proposal Writing Lead the development, writing, and submission of high-quality competitive government grant applications. Coordinate with program, finance, legal, and other internal stakeholders to gather required information and ensure submissions meet funder guidelines, deadlines, and compliance requirements. Post-Award Reporting & Compliance Oversee narrative portions of post-award grant administration, compliance, and reporting for competitive, discretionary, and capital government grants. Manage workplans, budget narratives, amendments, renewals, progress reports, and closeouts in partnership with Finance, Legal, and program teams. Ensure timely and accurate reporting. Collaboration Provide task supervision for Grants Associates supporting government grant opportunity identification, application writing, and reporting. Serve as a key liaison between Development, program departments, managing directors, and executive leadership regarding government funding. Cultivate relationships with government agency staff as needed. Contribute to the Development Department’s broader fundraising strategy. Systems & Process Improvement Maintain accurate grant records within grants management systems. Recommend and implement best practices to improve efficiency, compliance, and effectiveness in government grants management.
Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.5–7 years of grant-writing experience within the social services nonprofit sector, preferably in New York. Demonstrated success securing and managing government grants at the local, state, and/or federal level. Experience securing both programmatic and capital grants from NYC and NYS agencies is highly preferred. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking abilities. Ability to manage multiple deadlines and complex projects in a collaborative environment. Strong organizational skills with excellent attention to detail and follow-through. High degree of professionalism, accountability, and dependability. Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. Experience with government grant portals and AI tools preferred.
Compensation & Benefits
