Job Overview: BOP employees nationwide and DOJ surplus employees in the local commuting area are invited to apply for the litigation support position located at FCC Florence, CO. A retention incentive up to 13% may be offered to selected candidates who meet the criteria for the retention incentive.
Responsibilities: Assist in litigation preparation, analyze facts and legal questions, and perform related functions. Evaluate and prepare disposition letters for complex claims under the Federal Tort Claims Act, the Civilian Employee's Claims Act, and Section 3722 of Title 31. Research and analyze legal issues, conduct supplemental investigations as warranted. Prepare interrogatory responses, litigation reports, and records in response to Requests for Production under Rule 3 of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure. Locate new information sources, contact or correspond with other departments and agencies, interview staff, and investigate facts and allegations. Maintain security of the institution – security responsibilities precede all other duties and are performed regularly.
Requirements: U.S. Citizenship is required. CTAP eligibility: achieve a score of 85 or above based on at least half of the total possible points for vacancy KSAs or competencies, and submit the appropriate documentation to support CTAP eligibility.
Qualifications: Education Master’s or equivalent graduate degree OR two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree OR LL.B or J.D., if related. Ph. D. or equivalent doctoral degree OR three full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree OR LL.M., if related. Graduate education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position. Experience At least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level. Experience includes researching exemptions and case law, conducting extensive legal research and analysis, preparing factual investigative reports and position papers, reviewing and analyzing a variety of legal instruments, and preparing responsive legal documents and pleadings.
Compensation and Benefits: Representative rate $83,478 per annum ($40.00 per hour). Conditions of Employment Appointment is subject to satisfactory completion of a physical, background investigation, urinalysis, and credit checks. All applicants not currently working in an institution must complete a qualification inquiry regarding misdemeanor domestic violence convictions to be authorized to carry a firearm. Probationary period: 1‑year probationary period during which fitness and public interest are evaluated. Retention incentive up to 13% may be offered to selected candidates who meet the criteria.
