The Department Chair is responsible to their respective Dean for the general management and operation of their academic areas. The Chair represents their department(s) to the dean and university administrators, supports faculty in their professional development, and works with faculty to improve instructional programs and to develop programs that are responsive to changing needs of students.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Represents their department(s) to the dean and university administrators
- Supports faculty in their professional development
- Works with faculty to improve instructional programs
Works with program coordinators in Psychology (BS & BA), School Psychology, Clinical Mental Health Counseling, and School Counseling to understand the needs and support the goals of each program.
Works with and supports in recruitment and retention of faculty
Works with faculty to develop programs that are responsive to changing needs of students.
Supervises faculty, conducts annual evaluations, and recommends tenured and nontenured faculty members to the dean of their college for employment, retention, promotion, tenure, non-renewal, and dismissal
For the preparation and administration of budgets for the departments; Evaluates and recommends program offerings to the dean
For the supervision of the academic mentoring of students majoring in the department
Responsible for the acquisition, use, and care of departmental equipment.
Addresses student concerns and academic appeals/grievances
Acts as a liaison between faculty and administrators
Ensures compliance with university policies
Ensures accreditation standards are maintained
Promotes the department’s accomplishments and impact
Encourages and sustains scholarship, research, and participation in professional activities by members of their faculty
Maintains an active program of scholarship appropriate to the discipline
Works with and assists in recruitment and retention of students
Other duties as assigned
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Ability to work collaboratively with program coordinators and faculty across the department's research and professional programs, including supporting accreditation processes for the counseling and school psychology programs (CACREP, NASP).General Days/Hours
Monday - Friday
8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Preferred Qualifications:
Prior academic leadership experience, such as serving as a program coordinator or director. Experience with program accreditation, program review, or assessment is also valued.
Minimum Qualifications:
Doctorate in psychology, counseling, or a closely related field. Candidates must have a record of teaching, scholarship, and service that meets the Department of Psychology & Counseling's Promotion, Retention, and Tenure (PRT) criteria for appointment with tenure at the rank of associate or full professor. Must be eligible for graduate faculty status at Arkansas State University. Required Documentation: Cover letter, application, resume, 2 letters of recommendation, 3 reference names other than recommenders, and transcripts.
