Working under the supervision of the transportation director, bus drivers transport students, in a timely manner, over scheduled routes and/or special excursions, ensuring the vehicle is in safe operating condition and maintaining the safety of students during transport, loading and unloading from buses.
POSITION TITLEFLSA:
Non-Exempt, On-Call, As NeededGENERAL STATEMENT: The Substitute Bus Driver works to enable each student, through safe and efficient transportation, to take full advantage of the district's curricular and extracurricular programs. Working under the supervision of the transportation director, bus drivers transport students, in a timely manner, over scheduled routes and/or special excursions, ensuring the vehicle is in safe operating condition and maintaining the safety of students during transport, loading and unloading from buses.
QUALIFICATIONS: Must be 21 years of age or older
High School Diploma or equivalent, preferred"Class B" Commercial Driver's License, with school bus and passenger endorsements, required Pass state-mandated physical exam annually Pass random drug and alcohol testing Ability to follow oral and written directions in English Ability to report to work with limited advance notice Ability to follow safety precautions Ability to complete written forms and records Satisfactory completion of all onboarding requirements prior to first day of employment, including, but not limited to: Documentation of eligibility for employment in the U.S.Virginia State Police/FBI criminal history background check Virginia Department of Social Services background check Tuberculosis test/screening completed within the last 12 monthsESSENTIAL DUTIESDrives school bus for the purpose of transporting passengers over scheduled to and from school and/or activities and field trips in a safe and timely manner. Reinforces established guidelines and maintains passenger safety by advising student/passengers of appropriate behavior. Assesses incidents, complaints accidents, and/or potential emergency situations, and reports them to the appropriate personnel in a timely manner. Handles medical emergencies with the same degree of attention and prudence as a responsible adult with no medical training or expertise. Gathers information required to perform the job functions by arranging meetings, in-service training, workshops, etc. Ensures safety, appearance and sanitation by properly cleaning the vehicle. Operates in a safe condition and complies with mandated guidelines by performing pre/post-trip inspections and maintenance of assigned vehicle (e.g. fuel, fluid levels, tire pressure, exterior conditions, etc.).Informs school personnel, parents, and students of events, policies and/or practices (e.g. scheduled stops, established routes, route conditions, discipline incidents. Adheres to Motor Vehicle Code, Pupil Transportation Regulations of Board of Education and terms of the School Bus Driver Handbook, in addition to School Board policies and procedures. Documents activities, provides written reference, and conveys information by preparing reports (e.g. field trip reports, incident reports, inspection reports, passenger misconduct, mileage logs, student counts, routing information, etc.).Acts in a courteous and respectful manner, using good judgment and appropriate communication skills at all times. Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality regarding students, parents, and other staff members. Models non-discriminatory behaviors in all activities. Performs related work as required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Average amount of climbing, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions required.
