Materials Engineer System One is seeking to contract with a highly motivated Materials Engineer to support the engineering efforts of the Plant Materials and Welding team. This role will work as part of a high functioning team of engineers focused on materials, processes, supply chain development and supplier qualification for next generation material and components for sodium cooled fast reactors. You will be responsible for a wide range of development activities ranging from fundamental laboratory testing to development of a manufacturing process for advanced reactor components. A primary function of this role will be to use fundamental metallurgical principles and requirements definition to inform the development of a manufacturing process in conjunction with external suppliers. Tasks Interface with project teams to provide material selection, processes, and requirements for the reactor development programs. Perform scientific analysis of reports and test data (e.g., metallography, non-destructive inspection, mechanical properties, ductility) and generate technical specifications to document new knowledge related to reactor design and qualification. Oversee test programs designed to develop an understanding of complex mechanical phenomena (e.g. creep, fatigue, creep fatigue, stress corrosion cracking, and fracture) in sodium cooled fast reactor plant materials such as steel alloys Provide materials engineering support for the procurement of engineered components and systems including leading technical development of suppliers to increase technology readiness level of key components. Key Qualifications and Skills Minimum of 3 years of related experience with a B.S. degree; or an advanced degree with related experience, or equivalent experience. A degree in Materials Science/Engineering or a related technical discipline is desired. Prior experience in materials development, testing, and characterization for a nuclear reactor environment is desirable Experience qualifying materials for service in highly regulated applications is preferredExperience with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) is preferredExperience developing material processing specifications, evaluating material selections and reviewing vendor material definitions. An understanding of complex mechanical phenomena (e.g., creep, fatigue, creep fatigue, stress corrosion cracking, and fracture) in high temperature systems Strong communication skills desired The successful candidate will possess a high degree of trust and integrity, communicate openly and display respect, and a desire to foster teamwork
