Hadron Energy specializes in Micro Modular Reactor (MMR) development, design, and research based in the San Francisco Bay Area. As a leading MMR developer, Hadron Energy is designing factory-produced, transportable microreactors that provide 24/7 carbon-free power for data centers, government facilities, industrial sites, and remote communities. Our mission is to create a brighter, healthier, and more equitable energy future. Lead Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) Engineer –
Role Description:
This is a full-time remote role for a Lead Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) Engineer, based in the United States. The position is ideal for highly experienced nuclear safety and risk professionals who are passionate about applying risk-informed methodologies to support the development and licensing of advanced nuclear reactors. The Lead PRA Engineer will serve as Hadron Energy’s technical leader for probabilistic risk assessment and risk-informed design. This individual will be responsible for developing and maintaining the reactor PRA program, supporting licensing activities, and providing risk insights that directly influence reactor design, safety analyses, operational strategies, and regulatory interactions. You will work closely with reactor designers, safety analysts, licensing engineers, systems engineers, and operations personnel to ensure risk-informed principles are incorporated throughout the reactor development lifecycle. This role will play a critical role in establishing the licensing basis for the Halo Micro Modular Reactor and supporting interactions with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).
Responsibilities:
Lead the development, maintenance, and execution of Hadron Energy’s Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) program Develop and maintain Level 1, Level 2, and risk-informed safety evaluations supporting reactor design and licensing activities Perform and oversee event tree, fault tree, reliability, and uncertainty analyses Identify risk-significant systems, structures, and components (SSCs) and provide recommendations to improve plant safety and reliability Work directly with design engineering teams to incorporate risk insights into reactor architecture, safety systems, and operational concepts Support development of risk-informed licensing strategies and regulatory submittals Prepare PRA methodologies, technical reports, and supporting documentation for NRC interactions and licensing applications Collaborate with safety analysis, thermal-hydraulics, reactor physics, and systems engineering teams to ensure consistency between deterministic and probabilistic analyses Support hazard analyses, including internal events, external events, seismic events, and other initiating event evaluations Participate in design reviews, safety evaluations, and technical decision-making processes Develop risk-informed performance metrics and support operational readiness planning Interface with external consultants, national laboratories, and regulatory stakeholders on PRA-related matters Provide mentorship and technical leadership to safety and risk engineering personnel Qualifications & Skillsets Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Reliability Engineering, or a related field 10+ years of experience in Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA), nuclear safety analysis, or risk-informed licensing Extensive experience developing and maintaining nuclear PRA models Proficiency with PRA software and tools such as SAPHIRE, Risk Spectrum, CAFTA, or equivalent Strong understanding of fault tree analysis, event tree analysis, reliability engineering, human reliability analysis (HRA), and uncertainty quantification Familiarity with NRC risk-informed regulatory frameworks including RG 1.174, RG 1.200, and advanced reactor licensing guidance Experience supporting NRC licensing activities, safety evaluations, or design certification efforts Knowledge of reactor systems, nuclear operations, thermal-hydraulics, and accident progression analysis Experience evaluating internal events, external hazards, seismic risk, and common-cause failures Strong technical writing, communication, and presentation skills Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary technical efforts and provide strategic engineering direction Passion for advancing safe, scalable nuclear technology through risk-informed engineering and decision-making
