Our program emphasizes safety, skill development, and responsible firearm handling through supervised training and coaching with an emphasis on character and academic excellence. Programs are designed to help young participants build confidence, discipline, and teamwork in a supportive environment. Volunteers play a key role in mentoring youth and fostering a positive culture around outdoor recreation and shooting sports.
Role Description: The Volunteer Assistant Coach is a weekly commitment to coach shotgun sports with individual and group instruction. This position supports lead coaches in conducting practices, training sessions, and safety briefings, ensuring that youth participants follow all safety protocols and range rules. Practice-day tasks include helping set up and break down equipment, observing and guiding athletes during drills, offering constructive feedback, and reinforcing proper technique and sportsmanship. The Assistant Coach also assists with attendance tracking, communicating practice details to participants and families, and collaborating with program staff and volunteers to deliver a structured, positive learning environment. While this is a volunteer role, it requires consistent availability, reliability, and commitment to youth development and safety.
Qualifications: Candidates should be experienced in clay target sports to support a safe training environment, while working with athletes of various levels of ability and performance. Experience in coaching to assist in instruction, skill-building, and performance improvement is a plus! Candidates should possess strong communication skills to interact effectively with youth, families, and fellow coaches. Knowledge of firearm safety, range etiquette, and shotgun sports (e.g., trap, skeet, sporting clays) is highly beneficial. Prior experience working with youth in educational, recreational, or athletic settings is preferred. Ability to pass a required background check and abuse awareness test in compliance with the federal Safe Sports Act is required, as well as being familiar with and adhering to all safety and organizational policies. Dependable attendance, willingness to learn, and capacity to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment. We can be flexible with coaching schedules to accommodate a volunteer that can only commit to 2 weeks/month.
