Under the supervision of the Director of Facilities and building Administrator, the Head Custodian will be responsible for daily custodial operations; maintaining a sanitary and safe facility and grounds for students, employees and the general public; minimizing the risk of property damage, loss and liability exposure; completing assignments in a safe, accurate, and timely manner; and overseeing and supporting assigned custodians in the performance of their duties.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The maintenance/custodian position is responsible for seeing that the schools are maintained and repaired properly and that Facilities Director and building Administrator are kept informed of any building problems which may need major attention.
First four hours of the shift will include maintenance tasks across the district, and the last four hours will have an assigned area of coverage for cleaning located at East Windsor High School or another assigned school facility.
Is required to be the first point of contact to provide coverage when a Head Custodian calls out or has scheduled time off.
Is required to complete maintenance tasks assigned on OperationsHero and Google Calendar in all the school buildings.
Ability to complete minor carpentry, plumbing and electrical repairs as needed.
Daily inspection of all parts of the building, keeping the Facilities Director and building Administrator informed of any building needs.
Verify and account for deliveries of school supplies and materials received by truck with the school main office staff.
Maintain equipment in good working order.
Implement best practice related to new maintenance methods and materials to enhance facility operations .Complete daily cleaning assignments.
Responsible for snow removal and applies ice treatments on sidewalks, ensuring safe access to school entrances during inclement weather.
Assists administrators in coordinating school safety drills (e.g., fire drills), managing communications with external vendors (alarm companies), emergency service providers (fire, police) for compliance with safety codes and regulations.
Sets up and breaks down facilities for school events, functions, and other activities.
Participates in annual summer cleaning and maintenance tasks, including deep cleaning, carpet extraction, and floor waxing.
Remains on school property during scheduled school hours and approved extended hours for authorized building use.
Maintains a professional personal appearance consistent with employee handbook guidelines, understanding its impact on students’ and staff’s perception of East Windsor Public Schools.
Proficiently uses East Windsor Public Schools' (EWPS) Google platform tools, including Gmail, Google Calendar, and other relevant applications.
Demonstrates the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a custodial team.
Performs additional custodial-related duties as assigned by the Facilities Manager, Head Custodian, or OperationsHero.
Relay best practice and safety information to students, staff and the general public.
Inspect the school for the purpose of ensuring that the site is suitable for safe operations.
Check buildings and grounds to ensure they are safe and clean.
Works with school staff, service companies and contractors to maintain and improve building needs.
Responsible for routine maintenance of equipment and belts to ensure optimal operation.
Skilled in replacing ceiling tiles, repairing door hardware, and assessing and addressing minor mechanical issues promptly.
Performs painting tasks as required, including interior and exterior walls, handrails, bleachers, and flooring.
Keeps an organized inventory of all maintenance tools, supplies, and equipment.
Equipment:
The knowledge, skills, and abilities to operate and maintain hand and power tools and equipment, including but not restricted to: brooms, mops, floor cleaning and waxing machines, vacuums, snow blowers, lawn tractors, shovels, power mowers, leaf blowers, weed whackers.
Safety Requirements:
Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper use of tools and equipment used in the performance of duties.
Wears all appropriate safety gear.
Must comply with the school district's chemical safety program
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Knowledge of the position and duties.
Valid driver license.
Physical Demands:
Capable of performing physically demanding tasks, including but not limited to lifting and moving items weighing up to 65 pounds, operating snow removal equipment such as shovels and snow blowers.
Able to frequently stand, sit, walk, stoop, kneel, reach, talk, and hear.
Occasionally required to climb, balance, crouch, and crawl.
Possesses adequate visual acuity and depth perception, with or without corrective lenses.*The physical demands of this position are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Work Environment:
- Often work indoors, moving between classrooms and other school areas.
- May be exposed to noise levels that are distracting.
- Works near others, often within a few feet.
- Work related tasks may be subject to deadlines and time constraints, must be able to prioritize tasks
- May be assigned work in outdoor environments and be exposed to inclement weather including heat, cold, rain, and snow. Responsible for upkeep and care of school grounds, including landscaping tasks such as mulching and general softscape maintenance.
- Ability to work with chemicals. A properly fitted respirator will be provided if needed.
Work Days:
Schedule is set by the Facilities Director to meet the needs of the district.
Work Scheduled40 hours, Monday through Friday, some weekends may be required.
A typlical schedule would be 10 AM to 6:30 PMOvertime may be required and mandatory to meet the needs of the district.
May be called in early or after scheduled shifts in cases of emergency or natural disaster such as snow.

EWPS offers an exceptional benefits package, including paid time off, participation in the Town of East WIndsor sponsored retirement plan, and a percentage cost share for premium health, vision and dental insurance plans (percentage amount may be based on current collective bargaining agreement).Hourly compensation based on experience and the wage table in the current collective bargaining agreement, $22.37-$32.10 dependent on experience.
