Senior Application Engineer
Location: Remote (EST Hours Preferred)
Employment Type: Permanent / Full-Time
Compensation: $150,000-180,000
Travel: Up to 25% travel (approximately one week per month at customer sites)
Data Centers | Mission Critical Infrastructure | HVAC | Thermal Management | Energy Systems Our client is seeking a highly motivated Senior Application Engineer – Thermal Systems to support the development, integration, and promotion of advanced thermal infrastructure solutions for modern data center environments. This role is focused on helping customers evaluate project requirements and apply the appropriate combination of thermal, cooling, and supporting infrastructure technologies to support large-scale mission-critical facilities. The ideal candidate will have a strong mechanical engineering background combined with applications engineering experience supporting HVAC, cooling, thermal management, or energy infrastructure projects. This individual will work closely with customers, sales teams, product managers, and engineering teams to develop integrated solutions that meet both technical and business objectives. This is a highly consultative, customer-facing applications engineering role rather than a traditional design engineering position.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop tools, calculators, and technical documentation supporting data center reference designs.
  • Evaluate customer requirements and project scope to determine optimal thermal system solutions.
  • Integrate thermal infrastructure products into data center environments connected to utility grids or on-site power generation systems.
  • Perform project-specific thermal calculations and analyses related to:
  • Heat recovery systemsAbsorption chillersElectric chillersThermal energy storage
  • Cooling infrastructure
  • Support the introduction and integration of new technologies including cold storage systems, absorption chillers, and gas-powered cooling solutions.
  • Develop and maintain technical literature, benchmark studies, presentations, sales tools, and customer-facing collateral.
  • Collaborate with product management and engineering teams to research market trends, customer needs, competitive offerings, and emerging technologies.
  • Gather and analyze customer feedback to support future product development and business cases.
  • Prepare and deliver technical presentations, product demonstrations, competitive analyses, and training materials.
  • Participate in customer meetings, workshops, and technical training sessions.
  • Support both greenfield data center developments and upgrades to existing mission-critical facilities.
  • Help customers determine how multiple technologies fit together as part of a comprehensive thermal infrastructure solution.
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering required.
  • Mechanical Engineering degree strongly preferred.5+ years of experience in: Application Engineering, Solutions Engineering, Systems Engineering, Product Application Engineering, Technical Consulting
  • Experience supporting HVAC, cooling systems, thermal management, chiller systems, or related infrastructure.
  • Data center thermal management experience.
  • Strong technical aptitude with the ability to translate customer requirements into engineered solutions.
  • Experience evaluating customer project requirements and selecting appropriate products or technologies.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Customer-facing experience supporting technical discussions and solution development.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Smartsheet, and other business applications.
  • Fluent English communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications: Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Energy Engineering. Experience with:
  • Heat recovery systemsAbsorption chillersElectric chillersThermal storage technologies
  • Advanced cooling infrastructure
  • Exposure to power generation technologies and integration with facility infrastructure.
  • Experience supporting mission-critical facilities or large-scale industrial infrastructure projects.

  • This person should be comfortable reviewing a customer project, understanding the requirements, and determining:

  • How to build the best overall solution for the customer
  • This is not a pure design engineering role.
  • The ideal candidate has experience helping customers solve infrastructure challenges by selecting and integrating thermal technologies into larger systems.
