Founding AI Scientist - Pathology Foundation Models

The Role: You will lead the strategy and development of pathology foundation models, shaping how they are designed, trained, evaluated, and deployed into clinical and pharmaceutical applications. This is a highly cross-functional role spanning research and production. You will define how foundation models integrate with biological context, multimodal data, and downstream decision-making systems moving beyond isolated model improvements to building end-to-end, real-world solutions. As an early-stage hire, you will play a key role in shaping both the technical direction and the organisation itself.

Required Experience: Strong publication record in machine learning, including multiple first-author papers at leading conferences or journals Deep understanding of modern ML architectures (e.g. transformers, attention mechanisms, state-space models, mixture-of-experts)Experience working with GPU clusters and large-scale ML infrastructure (e.g. Kubernetes, SLURM, or similar)Solid software engineering skills and ability to build production-grade systems Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex ideas to both technical and scientific audiences Preferred Background Experience in oncology, cancer biology, or drug development Exposure to biomedical or healthcare foundation models Experience with multimodal and cross-modal learning systems Familiarity with healthcare regulatory frameworks (e.g. FDA, HIPAA)Contributions to open-source ML ecosystems Experience working with distributed or community-driven research groups Previous experience in a startup or early-stage environment To apply please reach out to Sam Shinner at Discover International
