Genetic Counselor Job at Dartmouth Health in Lebanon

Responsibilities: Coordinates aspects of genetic consultations for individuals and families. Provides triage for referrals, incoming calls, and inpatient consults. Obtains and evaluates individual, pregnancy, medical, and family histories to determine genetic risk for genetic or medical conditions in a patient, their offspring, and other family members. Discusses the features, natural history, means of diagnosis, genetic and environmental factors, and management for genetic or medical conditions with patients and families. Identifies and coordinates genetic laboratory tests and other diagnostic studies for the genetic assessment. Explains the clinical implications of the results of genetic laboratory tests or other diagnostic testing. Integrates genetic laboratory results and other diagnostic studies with the personal and family histories to assess and communicate risk factors for genetic or medical conditions. Evaluates a patient’s or family’s response to the genetic information reviewed and provide counseling. Provides written documentation of phone calls and office notes in the electronic medical record and for families. Participates in the teaching of residents, medical students, and other students. Participates in the supervision of genetic counseling students. Assists with data entry and maintenance of the department database. Participates in ongoing research activities of the program and the development of department protocols. Performs other duties as required or assigned.
