Position Overview: We are seeking a Control System Engineer to design, program, commission, and maintain industrial control systems that support safe, reliable, and efficient plant operations. The role focuses on PLC and HMI/SCADA development, system integration, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement of control strategies across water/wastewater/ hydroelectric, and utilities. The successful candidate will work closely with operations, maintenance, and project teams to deliver turnkey control solutions from concept through startup and handover.
Key Responsibilities: Design, program, and document PLC logic for new and existing automation systems using ladder logic, structured text, or function block programming Develop, configure, and maintain SCADA and HMI applications to provide operators with clear, reliable control and visualization Integrate field devices, instrumentation, drives, and safety systems using industrial communication protocols (Ether Net/IP, Modbus, Profibus, etc.)Perform system commissioning, loop checks, FAT/SAT support, and assist with plant startups to ensure systems perform to specification Troubleshoot and resolve hardware, software, and network issues in control systems to minimize downtime and improve reliability Collaborate with project managers, mechanical/electrical engineering, and operations teams to scope projects, estimate work, and deliver control system milestones on schedule Create and maintain clear engineering documentation, including control narratives, I/O lists, wiring diagrams, functional test plans, and user manuals Implement and optimize control strategies (PID tuning, sequencing, interlocks) and support continuous improvement initiatives to increase process efficiency and safety Provide technical support and training to operations and maintenance staff on control system operation and best practices Ensure compliance with industry standards and safety regulations across all control system activities
Qualifications: Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems, Mechatronics, or related engineering discipline (or equivalent experience)3+ years of experience in control systems engineering within industrial environments (experience requirements flexible based on seniority)Proven hands-on experience with PLC platforms (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar) and PLC programming languages (ladder logic, structured text, function block)Experience developing and maintaining SCADA systems and HMI applications (e.g., Wonderware, Ignition, Factory Talk, WinCC)Strong understanding of industrial networks, communication protocols (Ether Net/IP, Modbus TCP/RTU, Profibus) and field instrumentation Familiarity with industrial controls, drives, motor control, and basic electrical wiring and schematics Demonstrated ability to commission systems, perform loop checks, and troubleshoot control hardware/software issues Excellent problem-solving, written, and verbal communication skills, with experience preparing engineering documentation and operator training materials Willingness to travel to project sites and support off-shift commissioning as required; valid drivers license Relevant certifications (e.g., ISA, Rockwell, Siemens) or training are a plus
