About the Company: Founded 50 years ago, our client is a Chicago-based general contractor and developer specializing in commercial construction and real estate. With a staff averaging over 25 years of industry experience, the firm takes a team-oriented approach on every project - from preliminary budgeting through close-out- backed by a strong safety culture and modern project management tools like Procore and Building Connected. The portfolio spans multifamily developments, third-party GC work on new multifamily projects (50–160 units), and ground-up and renovation grocery/retail construction, including a growing pipeline of repeat work with a major national grocery client. This is a family-owned, middle-market general contractor ($30–60M) known for exceptional employee retention-many team members have been with the firm for over a decade. Leadership is hands-on, employee-focused, and genuinely invested in developing the next generation of leaders within the company.
About the Role: Our client is seeking a Director of Construction to oversee the majority of the firm's active ground-up and renovation projects across a variety of markets. This is a high-visibility leadership role with a clear path to future executive leadership within the organization- this individual will be groomed as a successor to the company's CEO over the coming years. The ideal candidate is a strong project leader who also brings vision, strategic thinking, and an entrepreneurial mindset- someone ready to grow beyond day-to-day project execution and take on broader ownership of the business.
Key Responsibilities: Oversee multiple concurrent projects, or one large-scale project, from initiation through close-out Lead subcontractor hiring, vendor relationships, and equipment/material tracking Ensure compliance with regulations, permitting requirements, and project management best practices Partner closely with ownership and leadership on business strategy and long-term growth planning Mentor and develop project management staff across the organization Maintain strong client relationships and support business development efforts
