THE ROLE | STAFF ACCOUNTANT, RETAIL ACCOUNTINGMax Mara is looking for a Staff Accountant to join our Finance team in New York. This is an opportunity to play a key role in supporting the financial operations of a global luxury fashion house, with a focus on our retail and e-commerce business. The role will oversee sales and payment reconciliations, sales tax compliance, journal entries, SAP accounting activities, and month-end close, while partnering closely with teams across the organization. We are looking for an analytical, detail-oriented professional who brings strong accounting expertise, a proactive mindset, and an interest in working within a dynamic luxury retail environment.
WHAT YOU’LL DO: • Prepare and file sales tax returns in accordance with applicable regulations and deadlines• Perform daily, weekly, and monthly reconciliations across retail and e-commerce channels• Reconcile sales transactions and revenue postings within SAP• Reconcile credit card, Pay Pal, and other digital payment provider settlements• Investigate and resolve discrepancies across sales reports, payment settlements, bank deposits, and accounting records• Prepare and post journal entries, including accruals, reclassifications, and month-end adjustments• Support month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes• Maintain detailed reconciliation schedules and supporting documentation• Manage accounting and reconciliation for employee clothing allowance programs• Partner with Retail Operations, AP, AR, and external partners to support efficient financial processes• Support internal and external audits• Contribute to process improvements, reporting efficiencies, and internal controlsWHAT YOU BRING• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field• 2–4 years of accounting experience, ideally within retail, fashion, luxury, consumer products, or a related industry• Strong understanding of general ledger accounting, reconciliations, and financial controls• Experience with sales tax filings and compliance• Advanced Excel skills, including Pivot Tables, XLOOKUP/VLOOKUP, and large-data-set analysis• Experience with SAP or a comparable ERP system• Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills• Strong written and verbal communication skills• Ability to collaborate effectively across departments and manage multiple prioritiesNICE TO HAVE• Experience reconciling retail sales, POS transactions, and payment processor settlements• Experience within a luxury, fashion, or multi-store retail environment• Exposure to e-commerce accounting and reconciliation• Familiarity with month-end close and financial reporting• A proactive, solutions-oriented approach to problem solvingWHO YOU AREYou are analytical, dependable, and detail-oriented, with a genuine passion for accuracy and continuous improvement.
