Richmond County Correctional Institution Supervisor The purpose of this classification is to supervise the day-to-day operations and inmates involved in performing skilled and semi-skilled trade work in the maintenance, and repair of the Richmond County Correctional Institution. Supervises, and directs inmate work detail with building/ground maintenance to include plumbing, electrical, HVAC etc.; conducts roll calls and head counts; escorts inmates to area of assignment; maintain order and discipline among inmates and trains inmate workers in job functions as necessary Organizes, prioritizes and assigns work: prioritizes and schedules work activities in order to meet objectives; develops inmates' schedules to ensure adequate coverage and control; ensures that proper resources are available to complete the assigned work; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work; consults with other city departments to assist with complex/problems situations and provide technical expertise; and provides progress and activity reports to management. Ensures adherence to established safety procedures: monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; places safety cones, markers, or signs to alert employees/citizens of work areas, wet floors, or other potential hazards; locks/secures chemical storage areas; and initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations. Supervises and conducts maintenance inspections of buildings, equipment, and facilities to identify potential problems, unsafe conditions, needed repairs, or other situations requiring attention: issues work orders for maintenance/repair work; and reports damage/vandalism, potentially hazardous/dangerous situations, or other problems to appropriate personnel. Supervises building maintenance, repair, and modification projects: writes and receives work orders; prioritizes and schedules work; determines and coordinates necessary equipment, materials, and manpower to complete projects and work orders; plans most efficient use of resources; assigns projects and work orders to appropriate inmates; redirects or reassigns inmates in response to emergencies or changes in priorities; monitors progress in meeting project deadlines; and responds to problems or emergency situations Monitors, participates in, and inspects work activities to ensure operational efficiency: coordinates general maintenance and repair work on buildings, equipment, and related facilities; and monitors and assists inmates and/or contractors in performing skilled, semi-skilled, and manual work involving building maintenance, building renovation, carpentry, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning, or other projects. Communicates with ARCCI officials, supervisor, other employees, counselor, inmates, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems. Perform other duties of a similar nature or level.
Education: High School diploma or GED; Associates Degree in facilities maintenance or related field preferred.
Experience: Five (5) years of experience in carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing or maintenance work; five (5) years of experience with increasing responsibility or in a supervisory position preferred. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Considerable knowledge building/ground maintenance Proficiency in management of skilled and semi-skilled workers and the use of standard grounds and building maintenance tools and equipment Proficiency in electrical and/or plumbing Good communication skills Demonstrated ability to work independently Supervise state inmate labor Licensing/Certification: Possession of a valid driver's license with good driving history. If State license is other than Georgia or South Carolina, applicant must obtain a license in Georgia or South Carolina within 30 days of employment. *This position requires driving a county vehicle and requires the incumbent to be at least 21 years of age.*Possess or have the ability to pass P.O.S.T. Certification within the timeframe required by this department, which is normally within one year but may be altered. Possess or have the ability to obtain a valid state operator/driver's license for the type of vehicle/equipment operated. Due to required certifications, candidates with felony convictions are ineligible to be hired in Corrections. OTHER:This position will require staff call up in an emergency situation. Travel from office to other locations will be required for this position. Requires the ability to operate and control the actions of the same equipment, machinery, and/or objects. Verbal: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data and information. Math: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; the ability to calculate decimals and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; and the ability to interpret graphs. Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems; to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; and to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives. Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria. Physical Abilities: Tasks require the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 100 pounds).
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally. Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature and noise extremes, fumes, hazardous materials, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim light, toxic agents, disease, pathogenic substances, animal/wildlife attacks, or animal bites.
