The Steel Erection Survey Helper supports the Steel Erection Surveyor in establishing project control, verifying anchor bolt locations and foundation elevations, and plumbing structural steel columns within applicable AISC tolerances. Working under the direct supervision of the Surveyor, he/she will handle and set up survey equipment, hold rods and prisms, mark layout, assist with recording field data, and learn the procedures and tolerances required to progress toward a journeyman Surveyor role.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Pre-Erection / LayoutAssist the Surveyor in establishing and verifying control lines, baselines, and benchmarks
  • Hold the prism pole, level rod, or target on points as directed
  • Set, protect, and maintain control points, hubs, and stakes
  • Mark and paint layout lines, gridlines, and reference points on concrete and steel
  • Assist with checking anchor bolt/rod placement, projection, spacing, and pattern
  • Assist with taking foundation/pier and top-of-concrete elevation shots
  • During Erection
  • Assist the Surveyor with checking column plumbness and base elevations
  • Communicate clearly with the Surveyor and ironworkers by radio or hand signals
  • Help with shimming and leveling at column bases as directed
  • Report any observed out-of-tolerance conditions to the Surveyor
  • Quality / Documentation
  • Assist in recording field notes, measurements, and as-built data
  • Help organize and maintain survey records for the quality program
  • Learn and become familiar with tolerances in the AISC Code of Standard Practice for Steel Buildings and Bridges (ANSI/AISC 303)
  • Follow QC documentation procedures as instructed
  • Equipment Care
  • Transport, set up, and break down tripods, instruments, and accessories
  • Clean, inspect, and properly store survey equipment daily
  • Report damaged or malfunctioning equipment to the Surveyor
  • Keep batteries charged and supplies (paint, stakes, nails, flagging) stocked
  • Equipment Used:
  • Sokkia FX-101 Sokkia FX-201 Leica NA-2Sokkia iX-1501 Tripods, prism poles, level rods, tape measures, and hand tools
  • AutoCAD (exposure/training; not required at hire)
Qualifications:
  • Prior construction, survey, or ironwork experience preferred but not required
  • Basic math skills and ability to read a tape measure accurately
  • Must be willing to travel to projects and relocate as needed.
  • Must work hours as necessary to meet project deadlines.
  • Regular, punctual attendance is required.
Physical Demands: Exposure to extreme temperatures and a loud and dusty environment. Climb, stand, walk, and perform physical tasks throughout the workday. Frequently lift and carry objects up to 50 pounds, including instruments and tripods over uneven terrain. Work at heights and on elevated steel with appropriate fall protection. Be comfortable working around heavy equipment and active construction sites.
