A highly established and growing multifamily real estate and property management organization is seeking an Accounting Manager to join its Property Accounting team. This position will manage the day-to-day accounting for a portfolio primarily consisting of affordable housing properties while overseeing a team of approximately 3–4 accounting professionals. The organization offers an exceptionally stable accounting team, strong leadership, minimal turnover, and a primarily remote work environment. Candidates must live within the Washington, DC–Baltimore region and be available for occasional in-person responsibilities. Prior Affordable Housing Property Accounting experience is REQUIRED for this position.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage the day-to-day property accounting activities for a portfolio primarily consisting of affordable housing communities.
  • Oversee and review monthly financial statements, journal entries, bank reconciliations, account reconciliations, wires, and other close activities.
  • Ensure accurate and timely completion of monthly and year-end close requirements.
  • Review property-level financial results and investigate unusual balances or variances.
  • Partner with Property Operations on annual budgets, reforecasts, cash funding draws, and financial reporting.
  • Serve as the accounting lead for new property transitions, dispositions, and management transitions.
  • Support annual audits and respond to auditor requests and supporting schedules.
  • Communicate with internal and external stakeholders regarding financial statements, distributions, tax-related matters, and other property accounting issues.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, internal controls, accounting policies, and reporting requirements.
  • Manage, mentor, train, and develop a team of approximately 3–4 accounting professionals.
  • Assist other property accounting teams with additional portfolio needs as required.
  • Maintain consistent reporting quality while managing multiple properties and deadlines.
  • Hard Requirements
  • Candidates must have:
  • Affordable Housing Property Accounting experience – REQUIREDBachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
  • Yardi or MRI experience 7+ years of progressive real estate/property accounting experience 3+ years of accounting leadership, supervisory, or management experience
  • Strong understanding of property-level month-end close
  • Experience preparing and reviewing property financial statements and reconciliations
  • Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and property-level financial analysis
  • Strong knowledge of GAAPStrong Microsoft Excel skills, including PivotTables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, SUMIFS, and similar functions
  • Ability to manage multiple properties, priorities, and reporting deadlines
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Background:
  • The strongest candidates will have experience managing the accounting for a portfolio of multifamily affordable housing properties and understand the nuances associated with affordable housing property management.
  • Experience with Yardi is particularly valuable.
