Position Overview: Brant Legal Nurse Consultants, LLC. is seeking a knowledgeable, analytical, and detail-oriented Legal Nurse Consultant to support attorneys, law firms, insurance professionals, and other legal clients with medical-related case analysis and litigation support. The Legal Nurse Consultant will apply clinical nursing knowledge, medical-record interpretation skills, and an understanding of healthcare standards to help legal professionals evaluate cases involving medical malpractice, personal injury, nursing negligence, long-term care, product liability, forensic matters, and other healthcare-related issues. This remote position requires strong clinical judgment, excellent written communication, careful documentation, and the ability to translate complex medical information into clear, organized, and actionable findings for legal professionals. The successful candidate will collaborate with legal teams and consulting professionals to review medical records, develop timelines, identify potential standards-of-care concerns, research medical issues, and support case preparation from initial evaluation through litigation. Key Responsibilities1. Medical Record Review and AnalysisReview, organize, and analyze medical records, including physician notes, nursing documentation, diagnostic reports, laboratory results, medication records, treatment plans, and discharge summaries. Identify clinically significant events, inconsistencies, omissions, and documentation discrepancies. Prepare comprehensive medical chronologies, timelines, and case summaries. Identify relevant medical history, pre-existing conditions, injuries, diagnoses, treatments, and outcomes. Summarize complex clinical information in clear language for attorneys and other legal professionals. Maintain accurate references to source documents and relevant medical-record entries. Identify missing records and recommend additional documentation for review.2. Standards-of-Care Evaluation Review nursing and healthcare practices against applicable professional standards and relevant clinical guidelines. Identify potential deviations from accepted standards of care for further evaluation. Assess documentation relating to patient assessment, monitoring, medication administration, treatment, escalation of care, and discharge planning. Research applicable nursing practices and clinical standards relevant to the case. Assist attorneys in understanding the medical significance of identified concerns. Distinguish documented facts from clinical interpretations and issues requiring expert review.3. Case Merit Screening Conduct preliminary medical reviews to help legal teams evaluate potential case merit. Identify strengths, weaknesses, and unresolved medical questions within case documentation. Analyze potential relationships between alleged negligence, injuries, treatment, and patient outcomes. Identify relevant medical issues requiring further investigation or specialist input. Prepare objective summaries to support informed case-selection and litigation decisions. Assist with determining whether additional records, expert consultations, or medical literature reviews may be appropriate.4. Medical Research and Case Documentation Conduct medical literature searches using credible clinical and professional resources. Research relevant disease processes, procedures, injuries, treatments, and standards of care. Prepare written reports, medical summaries, and supporting documentation. Explain medical terminology and clinical concepts to attorneys and legal support staff. Identify relevant research that may help clarify causation, damages, treatment decisions, or future medical needs. Maintain appropriate citations and references for research-based findings.5. Litigation and Trial Support Assist attorneys with preparation for depositions, mediation, settlement discussions, and trial. Help identify medically relevant questions for expert interviews and depositions. Organize medical exhibits, timelines, and demonstrative materials. Support the preparation of case summaries and medical sections of legal documents. Participate in case strategy discussions when requested. Coordinate with qualified medical experts and assist with identifying appropriate specialists. Provide medical clarification and organizational support throughout the litigation process.6. Medical Cost and Future Care AnalysisReview medical bills and related documentation to support analysis of healthcare charges. Assist with identifying future treatment needs documented in the medical evidence. Organize information regarding anticipated procedures, rehabilitation, medication, and long-term care. Support medical cost projections when appropriately qualified and assigned. Identify documentation gaps affecting the evaluation of medical expenses and future care requirements.7. Specialized Case Review Depending on clinical experience and assigned cases, the consultant may assist with matters involving: Medical malpractice and nursing negligence Personal injury and accident-related injuries Long-term care and elder-care litigation Patient falls, pressure injuries, and medication errors Forensic and criminal cases Child abuse, neglect, and other injury-related matters Product liability involving medical or injury-related issues Regulatory compliance and healthcare practices Medical necessity and reasonableness of healthcare charges8. Confidentiality and Quality Assurance Maintain strict confidentiality of medical records, client information, and legal case materials. Follow applicable privacy, security, and professional requirements when handling protected health information. Use approved systems for storing, reviewing, and transmitting case documentation. Maintain complete, accurate, and organized work records. Meet established deadlines and communicate promptly regarding project progress. Review completed work for accuracy, clarity, consistency, and completeness. Comply with applicable professional standards and company procedures.
Required Qualifications: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred; an appropriate nursing qualification that meets applicable registered-nurse licensing requirements is required. Current, active Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing. At least 1 years of clinical nursing experience; additional experience in medical-surgical nursing, critical care, emergency care, surgical nursing, long-term care, or nursing administration is advantageous. Demonstrated ability to interpret medical records and clinical documentation. Strong understanding of anatomy, physiology, disease processes, treatments, and nursing standards of care. Excellent analytical, organizational, and critical-thinking skills. Strong written communication and report-writing abilities. Proficiency with electronic medical records, digital documents, and Microsoft Office applications. Ability to manage multiple cases and meet deadlines independently. Ability to communicate complex medical concepts clearly to nonclinical audiences. Commitment to confidentiality, professional integrity, and objective case analysis.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Completion of a recognized Legal Nurse Consultant education or certificate program.
  • Legal Nurse Consultant Certified (LNCC) credential or another relevant professional certification.
  • Previous experience in legal nurse consulting, medical record review, utilization review, risk management, clinical quality assurance, or healthcare compliance.
  • Experience supporting plaintiff or defense litigation.
  • Familiarity with medical malpractice, personal injury, long-term care, or forensic cases.
  • Experience preparing medical chronologies, case summaries, or expert-support documentation.
  • Knowledge of medical literature databases and evidence-based research.
  • Experience with case-management and document-review software.
  • Experience with medical cost projections or future-care analysis is an advantage.
