The building has hosted performances by legends including Louis Armstrong, Allen Ginsberg, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Dead Kennedys, Iggy Pop, The Sex Pistols, The Ramones, The Specials, Metallica, Guns N' Roses, Herbie Hancock, R.E.M., Robin Williams, Whoopi Goldberg, Soundgarden, Bad Religion, Dave Chappelle, and many others. Via Crowd Doing, we are regenerating the Mab as a hybrid cultural ecosystem: live music, dance, comedy, rentals, popup culinary lab, off-peak wellness partnerships, art-walk activations, and solarpunk / regenerative-culture programming. North Beach is the Mab's homefield — cafés, bars, bookstores carrying the neighborhood's Beat literary heritage, Italian restaurants, merchant associations, community boards, and the First Friday Art Walk that already brings foot traffic right past the door. We're looking for an ambassador who can build cross-programming and cross-promotion with these neighbors: café partnerships, bar happy-hour tie-ins, bookstore reading nights, merchant-association referrals, and joint promotion with First Friday activations. The puzzle There's a genuinely interesting puzzle in this role: proximity alone rarely turns into partnership, and figuring out exactly what does convert a neighbor into a collaborator is worth studying closely. The Mab's neighbors are its most natural allies and its most obvious referral source, and yet there's no systematic relationship-building happening between them. A café two doors down could send customers to a show. A bookstore could co-host a reading. A merchant association could put the Mab on every visitor's map. None of this requires discovering anything — it's already adjacent. This role turns that geographic proximity into real cultural infrastructure.
What you'll do:
You'll tend a defined slice of the North Beach cross-promotion relationship work — enough to deliver real partnerships in your first month, without carrying the whole venture. Neighbor mapping — Build a working map of North Beach's cafés, bars, bookstores, Italian restaurants, merchant associations, and community boards most relevant to cross-programming and cross-promotion with the Mab. Relationship sourcing — Identify the actual owners, managers, or event coordinators at each business, using a combination of in-person visits and AI-assisted research to arrive prepared with real context on each business. Social listening for collaboration moments — Watch the social media accounts, newsletters, and public communications of North Beach cafés, bars, bookstores, and merchant associations to spot upcoming events and moments where the Mab could naturally weave in as a collaborator. Thoughtful first messages — Draft and send warm, personal, well-researched introductory notes and in-person introductions, using AI tools to move quickly across a large number of small businesses without it reading like a form letter. Partnership design — Shape concrete cross-programming ideas that work for both sides: happy-hour tie-ins before a show, a bookstore reading night that feeds into a Mab event, a First Friday joint activation, merchant-association referral swaps. Introduction to the producing team — Bring well-vetted partnerships to Mabuhay's producing team with everything they need to move to a scheduling conversation: business contact, partnership concept, timing, and any mutual-promotion terms. Relationship tracking — Use AI tools for meeting notes, follow-up sequencing, and keeping a simple tracker of who you contacted, current status, next step, and outcome. Small weekly summary (10 minutes) so the team knows where things stand. Who this role is for We're looking for someone who can contribute meaningfully from week one — not a senior partnerships executive, not an assistant. Somebody with real, demonstrable skill in at least two of the following, and curiosity about the rest: Community organizing, merchant-association work, or small-business partnership building Genuine familiarity with North Beach as a neighborhood — its cafés, bars, bookstores, and rhythms Personal, researched, respectful introductory writing that actually gets replies Event co-promotion, cross-marketing, or grassroots partnership experience Lightweight CRM / relationship-tracking discipline (spreadsheets, Notion, Airtable, or similar) Comfort with AI-assisted research and relationship-writing workflows (any current LLM tool) Genuine curiosity about what actually turns a neighbor into a collaborator, rather than a goal-driven interest in quick cross-promotion Comfort watching social media, community feeds, and newsletters with a listening ear rather than a promotional one You'll thrive here if you already love the neighborhood, enjoy walking into a shop and striking up a real conversation with the owner, and are drawn to the idea of stitching adjacent small businesses into a shared cultural fabric with the Mab at its center. Being local to San Francisco, or willing to be in North Beach regularly, is essential. Why do this The problem matters. A cultural venue that's woven into its neighborhood's daily life is far more resilient than one that stands alone. This work builds that resilience one relationship at a time. The stakes are real. The partnerships you build lead to actual joint events, actual referral traffic, and actual foot steps through the Mab's door — not a hypothetical. The craft is grounded, and it will test your read on readiness. You'll be stretched to tell which small businesses are actually ready to collaborate from which are just being polite, and to make the ask easy enough that a busy owner can say yes without friction. That's a real, transferable skill worth building on purpose. The room is legendary. You're helping regenerate the venue where the Dead Kennedys played, where Robin Williams cut his teeth, and where generations of Bay Area cultural experimentation happened. You'll work alongside people who care, across a much wider map than this room. You'll collaborate asynchronously with Crowd Doing's global network of volunteers — people working on solarpunk design, herbal medicine research, and wildfire prevention finance — through shared written updates, shared docs, and async check-ins. You will likely never meet most of them in person, and you'll still learn from how they think. That cross-pollination between wildly different fields is not a side benefit of this role. It's the point. Time commitment & structure Flexible, part-time, mostly asynchronous Ongoing commitment, renewable Onboarding via Crowd Doing's standard volunteer orientation
How to apply:
Send a short note (5–8 sentences is plenty) covering: Which 2–3 areas above you can contribute in immediately, with one specific example of past work (a small-business partnership you built, a cross-promotion effort you ran, a merchant relationship you nurtured) One North Beach café, bar, bookstore, or merchant group you'd want to reach out to for Mabuhay Gardens in your first month, and why they'd be a fit Your availability and whether you're based in or near North Beach No cover letter theater. Show us how you think and who you'd talk to first. Crowd Doing is an equal-opportunity volunteer organization. We welcome contributors of every background, geography, and career stage. This is an unpaid volunteer role and service-learning opportunity.
