Libraries and ArchivesOther General Government SupportAdministration of Education ProgramsLibrary Supervisor – North Branch Services The purpose of this job is to manage and direct the daily operations of the branch under the supervision of the Assistant Library Director. This position will require working collaboratively with the Youth Services Supervisor and Public Services Supervisor to develop, plan and present library programs at the North Branch.
Responsibilities include:
- Providing leadership in attracting, retaining, and developing an engaged workforce in the delivery of superior services to County residents and businesses.
- Providing leadership and management to staff and volunteers. Supervising the work of and monitoring and evaluating on-going performance of staff; assessing and making recommendations regarding training needs.
- Directing individuals on complex work and interpreting the application of policy and procedure.
- Engaging in leadership opportunities, professional development, participating in committee work and providing instruction to patrons and staff as assigned.
- Working service desks, assisting patrons to check out library materials, use public computers and PACs.
- Registering patrons for library cards, assisting with fees, placing holds and performing payment transactions.
- Pulling patron holds as needed.
- Educating patrons in locating materials or information in all areas of the library. Providing readers advisory services and assisting patrons in the use of library technologies.
- Performing regular tasks relating to the Automated Materials Handling System, including providing basic troubleshooting.
- Participating in developing programming for patrons of all ages.
- Providing library tours and programming for interested groups.
- Keeping the library safe by addressing problem patron behavior on the spot or reporting it up the chain if necessary.
- Communicating Library programs with community groups and or book talks.
- Attending regularly scheduled departmental and all-staff meetings, annual staff training day, and any additional mandatory meetings.
- Other related work and special projects as assigned.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Fiscal responsibilities include accounting duties associated with patron fees.
- County organization duties and responsibilities include:
- Representing the Department to other County departments, elected officials, outside agencies, customers, County residents and visitors.
- Providing quality customer service to individuals needing directions or assistance.
- Supervisory relationships include:
- Works under general supervision of the department Assistant Director. This position will manage various employees in the assigned department and will be responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of assigned employees.
Qualifications include:
Knowledge of policies, procedures, and activities of the library and library management practices as they pertain to the performance of duties relating to the job of Library Supervisor – North Branch Services.
Knowledge of administrative policies and procedures of the County.
Knowledge of management and supervisory practices & principles, including the ability to make final employment recommendations, preparing performance evaluations, managing time off, and maintaining personnel records.
Knowledge of pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
Knowledge of current office practices and procedures.
Knowledge of computer software consistent for this position.
Skill in analyzing complex administrative information and issues, defining problems, and evaluating alternatives, and recommending methods, procedures, and techniques for resolution of issues.
Skill in organizational and time management to prioritize duties to accomplish a high volume of work product while adapting to constant changes in priority.
Skill in applying judgment and discretion in resolving problems and interpreting policies and regulations.
Ability to quickly learn and use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology.
Ability to perform detailed work accurately and independently in compliance with stringent time limits requiring minimal direction and supervision.
Ability to instruct and train in methods and procedures.
Ability to organize, assign, and modify the work assignment of others, and (re)-establish priorities to meet deadlines.
Ability to effectively communicate and interact with members of the public, and other groups involved in the activities of the library.
Ability to establish and maintain accurate records of assigned activities and operations.
Ability to interpret and implement local policies and procedures; written instructions, general correspondence; Federal, State, and local regulations.
Ability to perform mathematical calculations required of this position.
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Ability to analyze facts and exercise sound judgment in arriving at conclusions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion regarding business-related files, reports, and conversations, within the provision of Freedom of Information Act and other applicable State and Federal statutes.
Ability to work the allocated hours of the position.
Work environment is performed in a typical indoor office setting; and is mostly sedentary with periods of mobility and light physical activity. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Level of responsibility subjects the incumbent to moderate stress due to interruptions.
Physical and mental requirements/activities include:
Occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; must be able to push and pull carts weighing 60 to 80 lbs. Work regularly requires sitting, frequently requires standing, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions and occasionally requires walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling and reaching with hands and arms.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance and peripheral vision; depth perception; and the ability to adjust focus. Will spend a large amount of time viewing a computer screen.
Vocal communication and normal hearing are required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
Acceptable verbal and conversational skills to effectively communicate with others via the phone, at meetings and to greet and assist visitors.
Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data and observing general surroundings and activities.
Work is primarily in an office setting.
Use and normal maintenance of office machines, (copier, computer, printer, etc.).Frequent use of phone handset and repetitive use of hand & fingers to operate office equipment, use computer keyboard & computer mouse and to perform other office tasks.
Ability to recognize occupational hazards in work activities and take safety precautions.
Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions and demonstrating intellectual capabilities.
