Role Description:
The Assistant Controller is a full-time, on-site role based in the Charleston, South Carolina. Maintain the general ledger across multiple entities, ensuring accuracy and integrity of financial data. Execute month-end and year-end close activities, including journal entries, account reconciliations and supporting schedules. Perform cost allocations across entities and properties to ensure accurate expense distribution. Reconcile intercompany activity and process expense reimbursements. Process bi-weekly payroll, including payroll entries, reconciliations, and reporting in coordination with HR and external providers. Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports. Assist with external audits, fax filings, and compliance with financial reporting standards and internal policies. Track and reconcile commission payments. Assist with the development, documentation, and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) across the accounting function. Contribute to process improvement and automation initiatives, identifying opportunities to increase efficiency and reduce manual work. Collaborate with property management, leasing, and operations teams to gather information needed for accurate reporting.
Qualifications:
5+ years of accounting experience preferably in real estate, property management or a multi-entity environment Hands on experience with accounts payable and multi-entity cost allocation Candidates should possess knowledge of GAAP, internal controls, and compliance processes relevant to real estate and property management operations. Experience documenting workflows and contributing to SOP developments a plus Highly proficient in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, lookups, complex formulas)Experience with property management or ERP accounting software preferred Candidates should possess clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across accounting, property management, and development teams. Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or related field required. CPA required.
