VITA volunteers help provide free, accurate, and confidential tax preparation services to eligible individuals and families in our community. This is a great opportunity for individuals who enjoy working with people, want to give back to their community, and are interested in developing or applying their knowledge of tax preparation and financial services. No prior professional tax preparation experience is required for many volunteer roles. Training and certification are provided to help volunteers develop the knowledge and skills needed to serve taxpayers effectively.
Responsibilities:
Depending on the volunteer role, responsibilities may include:
Greeting and assisting taxpayers in a welcoming and professional manner.
Checking community members in and assisting them in filling out of intake forms.
Preparing federal and state income tax returns for low-income and elderly individuals using approved VITA procedures and software.
Reviewing tax returns for accuracy and completeness.
Qualifications:
We are looking for volunteers who:
Are dependable, responsible, and committed to serving others.
Have strong attention to detail and a willingness to learn.
Are comfortable working with numbers, computers, and basic tax concepts.
Communicate clearly and respectfully with people from diverse backgrounds.
Can maintain strict confidentiality when handling personal and financial information.
Are willing to complete required VITA training and IRS certification.
Previous tax preparation experience is helpful but not required for many positions.
Volunteers do not need to be tax experts to participate. We provide training and resources to help you succeed in your role.
Time Commitment:
Volunteers should be prepared to complete required training and certification before providing tax preparation services. Volunteer schedules will be coordinated with the Westminster Tax Clinic and may include weekday and/or weekend opportunities during the tax season. Volunteers choose their own schedules, and we offer volunteer opportunities during the mornings, afternoons, evenings, and weekends too! Whether you have tax experience or are simply looking for a meaningful way to serve your community, we welcome individuals who are eager to learn, contribute, and make a difference through the VITA program.
