Location: South Portland, ME 04106 Job type – 3 to 4 months contract with possible extension
Role Overview: This position will support the Global Instruments Quality organization and is ideal for a hands-on technician with strong experience in electromechanical troubleshooting, medical instrumentation, equipment repair, quality inspection, and regulated manufacturing environments. The successful candidate will work independently on advanced technical issues, perform equipment repairs and acceptance testing, analyze service and calibration data, and ensure all work meets applicable ISO, FDA, quality, safety, and documentation requirements.
Key Responsibilities: Perform advanced troubleshooting, repair, rebuild, and final acceptance testing of medical devices and instrumentation. Perform cleaning, decontamination, disassembly, repair, and final assembly while following ESD and safety procedures. Diagnose complex technical problems by gathering, analyzing, and interpreting technical and service data. Analyze calibration and service information to verify compliance with established acceptance criteria. Inspect equipment, standards, parts, and mechanical components for defects, errors, and certification/calibration status. Read and interpret mechanical, electrical, and optical diagrams, technical specifications, and related documentation. Troubleshoot and resolve complex product and process issues to reduce rejects and improve throughput. Complete detailed test records, work orders, and quality documentation accurately and on time. Support the processing, review, and routing of Purchase/Work Orders for approval. Independently make cost-effective repair decisions and approve repairs within authorized limits. Assist Lead Technicians with advanced repairs and technical activities. Provide technical support and guidance to other technicians and participate in technical training. Perform routine cleaning, decontamination, and surveillance testing of laboratory areas according to SOPs. Maintain accurate records and support spare-parts inventory and material management. Communicate effectively with engineers regarding technical problems, root causes, and recommended solutions. Follow all applicable SOPs, quality systems, FDA requirements, ISO standards, safety procedures, and documentation practices. Complete required training within established deadlines. Handle and maneuver small components and parts as required. Work independently with minimal supervision while effectively prioritizing multiple technical assignments. Required Qualifications2-year technical degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.4+ years of experience in a high-volume production, manufacturing, quality, or technical service environment. Experience working within ISO, FDA, or comparable regulated quality systems. Hands-on experience with electromechanical repair, equipment rebuild, troubleshooting, or field service. Experience working with medical instrumentation or medical devices. Ability to read and interpret mechanical, electrical, and optical diagrams and technical specifications. Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Ability to accurately complete technical documentation, test records, and work orders. Proficiency with standard computer applications, including spreadsheets, databases, and word-processing software. Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality and compliance. Ability to communicate technical issues, problems, and solutions clearly with engineers and cross-functional teams.
Preferred Qualifications: 4+ years of experience as an Electromechanical Technician or Instrumentation Technician. Previous experience supporting medical device, diagnostics, laboratory, or life sciences instrumentation. Experience with equipment calibration, acceptance testing, preventive maintenance, or service operations. Experience working in an FDA-regulated manufacturing or quality environment. Experience troubleshooting complex electromechanical equipment with minimal supervision.
