PATROLJob Description Summary: The purpose of this job is to plan, organize, oversee, and coordinate daily activities of designated division within the Police Department. Manages assigned personnel who provide daily law enforcement, criminal investigations, records support, and equipment/vehicle supply throughout the department. Reviews and approves reports on incidents, crimes, search warrants, and statistical data. Serves as Watch Commander, Incident Commander, and SWAT Commander.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description Supports execution of department strategic plans, implementation of department-wide initiatives, and direction of operational activities; coordinates major projects and continuous quality improvement activities. Supervises, manages, and evaluates assigned employees and makes decisions about hiring, and discipline of employees; prioritizes and assigns work; develops and oversees employee work schedules and approves time away from work; provides and/or facilitates employee training and development; addresses employee concerns and/or problems; counsels and/or disciplines as appropriate; completes employee performance appraisals; determines or makes recommendations regarding new hire salaries; and acts as liaison between employees and management: motivates employees to achieve peak productivity and performance. Provides effective customer service to citizens and ensures those supervised do the same. Reviews reports, search warrants, probable cause statements, and other criminal justice documents prior to submission. Coordinates activities by scheduling work assignments, setting priorities, and directing the work of subordinate employees. Conducts financial and fixed asset audits to ensure compliance with departmental and city policies. Interprets and applies relevant law, policy, and best practice related to day to day operations of all applicable divisions. Responds to the public and media representatives, both orally and in writing, regarding department activities. Represents the organization at various community and/or business meetings, committees, and task forces; promotes existing and new programs and/or policies. Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function. Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Work requires supervising and monitoring performance for a regular group of employees (2 or more full-time employees) including providing input on hiring, issuing formal discipline, conducting performance evaluations, and realigning work as needed. Such authority is not merely of a routine or clerical nature but requires the use of independent judgment. Interactions have significant impact on the organization in terms of time, money, or public/employee relations. Fiscal Responsibility Position has moderate fiscal responsibility. May be responsible for the billing, collection, and/or accounting of funds. May be responsible for the handling and balancing of cash.
Education and Experience: An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered Education and Experience 60 or more college credit hours from an accredited college, preferred. Must currently be a Police Sergeant or have 5 years of experience as a full-time commissioned law enforcement officer with relevant supervisory experience. Licenses or
Certifications: Class A Peace Officer Standards and Training License. Valid driver's license. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities which may be representative, but not all-inclusive of those commonly associated with this position Knowledge of: Line supervisor and line employee job requirements and responsibilities. Department and city policies, procedures, and ordinances related to human resources. Legal studies including statutory and case law. Current trends and best practices in law enforcement. Effectively plan and delegate the work of others and to train and/or supervise the work of others. Recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems. Operate safely and effectively police vehicles, approved weapons, and equipment. Render credible testimony. Regularly use a computer, software, phone and related office equipment. Focus on tasks. Maintain a permanent residence within a 50-mile straight line radius of the Columbia Police Department, 600 E. Walnut St., Columbia, MO, within 180 days of hire. Work varied shifts to include nights, weekends, holidays, and in an on-call capacity.
