Hinterland Insurance is an independently owned and operated insurance MGA. Hinterland represents non-admitted insurance companies and offers insurance programs nationwide, including commercial property and casualty, and excess. In addition to competitive compensation and benefits, we offer a flexible/hybrid work environment, and the opportunity to join a team of experts. We all work hard, play hard, and see the growth of this company as an exciting challenge and an opportunity to create a strong, healthy organization where listening and feedback are encouraged.
About the Role:
Hinterland is looking for a Senior Underwriter to join our Renewals team. You will hold a Letter of Authority to underwrite renewal accounts across commercial property, including AOP and DIC, general liability, and package business, and you will be the front-facing underwriter for our wholesale broker partners on complex and challenging renewals. Risk selection is central to this role. At each renewal, you will take a critical look at your assigned accounts to determine pricing and structure correctly, and what it should look like going forward. You will balance disciplined underwriting with retention, and bring clear recommendations to the Renewal Underwriting Manager, to whom you will report.
Responsibilities:
Underwrite renewal accounts within your Letter of Authority, including commercial property (AOP and DIC), general liability, and package business.
Apply disciplined risk selection at each renewal, evaluating exposures, valuations, COPE, loss history and trends, and changes in operations.
Set renewal pricing, terms, deductibles, and coverage, balancing rate adequacy with retention.
Make clear, well-documented recommendations when an account may no longer fit our appetite.
Serve as the front-facing underwriter for brokers on complex and at-risk renewals, negotiating terms directly.
Refer accounts outside your authority to the Renewal Underwriting Manager with well-documented recommendations.
Serve as a point of contact for Underwriting Assistants, and partner with the Renewal Underwriting Manager on their training and development.
Partner with the Renewal Underwriting Manager on portfolio performance and underwriting priorities.
Maintain compliance with carrier guidelines and surplus lines requirements, and keep files audit-ready.
Qualifications3 to 5+ years of commercial property underwriting experience, with carrier or MGA experience strongly preferred.
Excess and surplus lines experience preferred.
Experience underwriting under delegated authority.
Strong command of property valuation, COPE, catastrophe exposure, and loss analysis.
DIC, earthquake, or flood underwriting experience is a plus but not required.
Proven ability to negotiate terms with brokers and make sound decisions with incomplete information.
Property and Casualty license or industry designations are a plus but not required.
Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
